Education

Northern Illinois University BS in Mathematics, 2009 - met qualifications for being a middle school/ high school educator

Experience

My name is Thomas Hodges. I have a BS in Mathematics from Northern Illinois University and have met the State of Illinois requirements to qualify as a middle school or high school teacher. For seven years, I have worked as a tutor in mathematics, and during that time have helped dozens of students rescue failing grades in both intermediate and advanced classes, and achieve standardized test scores required for admittance into gifted programs (including IMSA), universities (ACT and SAT), graduate programs (GRE), and military placement (ASVAB). I specialize in Calculus and Advanced/College Algebra, and work well with students that have ADHD. I have a knack for motivating discouraged students by keeping up on their study habits, tests and quizzes, and praising them for their hard work when they do well. My enthusiasm for my students and their academic progress creates in students a sense of confidence and a willingness to work hard. I am well versed in technology as a learning aide, and regularly use TI graphing calculators, Microsoft Mathematics and MS Excel when tutoring. I also keep up to date on internet based learning aids including Javascript/Shockwave demonstration modules, and websites that can be used for self-testing. When I am tutoring your son or daughter you can expect regular email communication and prompt replies to telephone calls and text messages. If you are an adult learner, I will similarly be easy to reach via telephone, email and text message. Currently, I tutor out of Elburn Library (Town and Country Library) two days a week, but I am willing to work out of other public libraries and coffee shops. The first tutoring session I always offer free.
