ExperienceAs a recent high school graduate, I have a lot of relevant and current knowledge and experience about high school subject material (particularly at the honors level), SAT/AP tests, and the college application process. Over the course of my college career, I have developed proficiency in a wide range of topics, especially those relating to the biological sciences. Specifics include:
--Previous experience tutoring middle school and high school mathematics, SAT (both reasoning test and subject tests), and biology. In the past two years, I have tutored a number of students specifically based on their SAT test needs.
--Currently working as an SAT Math specialist teacher/tutor with Ivy Review, Inc.
--2320 SAT score on first attempt (790 math/790 writing/740 critical reading)
--SAT subject test scores: 740 Biology; 790 US History; 720 Math II; 720 Literature
--Score of 5 on all AP tests taken: Biology, US History, Environmental Science, Language and Composition, Literature and Composition, Calculus AB
--Completed AP courses in subjects listed above, honors courses for Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Precalculus/Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Geometry
--Accepted to four UCs with Regents Scholarship/Honors Scholarship offers: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC San Diego
--Waitlisted at Harvard, Columbia University
--Currently a peer assistant with the University Honors Program at UC Davis, of which I have also been a member since 2012.
--Research Assistant in zoonotic disease lab with UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
--Presenter, 2015 UC Davis Undergraduate Research Conference (feel free to ask me about my research!)
I greatly enjoy tutoring students who are willing to learn. I understand that despite a teacher's best efforts, in some cases subject material simply doesn't "click" the first few times a student encounters it, and that is not a failure on the part of the student. My proficiency as a tutor is to approach subject material at the level a student needing help understands it, and explore different explanations to help that student master the topic(s) that they are struggling with. I am patient and willing to listen to and understand students' questions, and I am happy to keep trying alternate teaching styles until I can help a student find the method that "clicks" for them.
HobbiesI'm a dedicated student in college, but I enjoy not being cooped up in my room all day with my nose buried in textbooks. I've participated in a variety of intramural sports at UC Davis from soccer to dodgeball to inner tube water polo, and I've even been a member of the UC Davis fencing team. I'm an avid Bay Area sports fan (go Giants!), a writing enthusiast, and enjoy playing piano and video games when time allows. I enjoy movies in theaters and at home, and good friends who are willing to watch and laugh along with me while playing cards or board games as well.
At UC Davis, I am passionate about my studies in microbiology, and have taken a great interest (since high school) in infectious diseases. I have dedicated my upper division elective coursework to understanding the nature bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites and how they spread between hosts. In particular, I am fascinated by the topic of zoonotic diseases, or diseases capable of spreading between animals and humans. I am a student researcher in a lab focusing on zoonotic diseases in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, and have conducted guided but independent research. I plan on pursuing my passion for understanding and combating infectious diseases in graduate school, with the hope of earning a Masters in Public Health and a PhD in a field related to my current research.
