EducationUC Davis, B.S. in wildlife, fish and conservation biology (wildlife health/population genetics); Cabrillo College, A.A. in Art Photography, A.A. in Psychology, A.A. in Philosophy; currently a research assistant at the UC Davis veterinary genetics lab (mammalian conservation unit), and a graduate student in the graduate group in ecology with an area of emphasis in Ecological Genomics and Genetics
ExperienceExperience in tutoring one on one in WFC122, STAT 108, BIS 101, EVE 100, BIS2ABC. I can also tutor for general introductory biology, and ecology. However my favorite subjects to tutor are genetics (BIS101) and evolution (EVE100). I have tutored college students for the past 2 years.
I try and break things down to the essential concepts first and then build on that. I am very visually oriented, and use diagrams to convey ideas, and use examples that you can then follow step by step. I like teaching, and get satisfaction when people learn new things.
Over the past 2 years I have worked with a diverse set of students, all with different learning styles and I try to adapt to their learning styles. Sometimes this means having conversations on the material covered (and just "talking about it") or it may mean that I make detailed diagrams that define many key points of a certain subject (such as the water transport system in a tree). I have also worked with students with learning disabilities and english language learners.
I currently do population genetic research on endangered species, including the salt marsh harvest mouse, giant kangaroo rat, and north pacific Albatross. My future interests are in whole genome and transcriptome sequencing.
HobbiesI am a dog person, and like to spend time with my two small dogs. I tend to be interested in many other subjects outside the realm of biology, including economics, and I like to stay up to date on current news.
Additional hobbies include antiques, home decor, video games (not much time goes into this anymore), reading (non-fiction), watching documentaries, and photography

Luis is kind, patient, and creative in his teaching approaches. I always felt comfortable with him and I never had to feel embarrassed when certain concepts were especially difficult for me to understand. If I struggled to pick up on something, he was always able to come up with new and creative ways of explaining it, until I was able to reach that "aha" moment. Very knowledgeable in the subject matter and skilled at breaking it down for his students. Working with him definitely improved my grades. Highly recommended!
I've had a lot of tutors help me with upper division science class but i can honestly say Luis was the best! He is very knowledgeable and goes out of his way to help his students understand the material. He is super nice,easy-going, patient, professional and most importantly able to teach difficult subjects and make them easy and do-able. Also, really appreciated the fact that he accommodated me with my busy schedule. If you're looking for a good tutor, Luis is best out there!
