Experience

Why I want to be a tutor: I look forward to working with students, whether I am lecturing to 200 students, teaching a lab of 25, helping small groups of students during office hours, or tutoring a student with one-on-one. I love tutoring and teaching and want my students to succeed. I aspire to be an inspiring and dedicated teacher because as a student I have experienced the difference great teaching can make and strongly believe that all students deserve to have that experience. Tutoring and teaching experience: My passion for teaching was sparked as an undergraduate tutor at Oberlin College where I tutored college-level Biology and Neuroscience courses. After graduating I continued to pursue teaching opportunities as a high school science teacher in American Samoa. I taught Physical Science, Biology, and Chemistry to high school 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. I then came to Davis to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience. As a graduate student, I mentored many undergraduates and was a teaching assistant for Physiological Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Behavioral Epigenetics. When I graduated in June 2017, I decided teaching was the path for me. I am currently an adjunct community college professor at Sierra College, Sacramento City College, and American River College. I teach Intro Psychology, Biological Psychology, Research Methods for Psychology, Statistics, and Intro Biology. Grades and Test Scores: I have always received high grades in high school (GPA 4.7), college (GPA 3.7), and graduate school (GPA 3.7) and performed well on standardized tests (GRE Scores: Verbal 84%, Quantitative 91%, Analytical Writing 86%). In high school I received A’s in AP English (AP Score = 4), AP Biology, AP Chemistry (AP score = 5), AP French, AP Calculus (AP Score = 4), AP Statistics (AP score = 5), and AP Physics (AP score = 4). Unfortunately, I cannot remember my SAT scores. Relevant Classes: Undergraduate: Chem I (Structure and Reactivity); Chem II (Chemical Principles); Statistics Methods for Social and Behavioral Sciences; Calculus I and II; Organismal Biology; Intro to Neuroscience, Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology; Principles of Organic Chemistry; Cell and Molecular Biology; Cognitive Psychology; Genetics; Hormones, Brain, and Behavior; Neuroendocrine Research Methods; Virology; Cell Culture Research Methods; Fundamentals of Animal Behavior; Neuropharmacology; Neuroanatomy Graduate: Neuroanatomy; Cellular Neuroscience; Molecular and Developmental Neurobiology; Systems Neuroscience; Molecular Neuroscience; Cognitive Neuroscience; Developmental Neuroscience; Statistical Analysis of Psychological Experiments; Grant Writing; Seminar on College Teaching Other things about me: I am committed to becoming the best teacher and tutor I can be. I take every opportunity to attend workshops and seminars on teaching and incorporate new ideas into my pedagogy. At UC Davis I have participated in the workshop series “Thoughtful Pedagogy for Diverse Learning Environments,” and “Redefining Teaching: Student-Centered Strategies for Success,” as well as the Seminar on College Teaching. I am continually looking for ways to develop my teaching abilities. Although most of my coursework in undergraduate and graduate school was heavily science based, I am also a strong writer and communicator. As a graduate student I won several awards for communicating my research, including Best Poster Award at the Brain Awareness Week Neuroscience Public Seminars, UC Davis Chancellor’s Grand Prize for Best Oral Presentation at the Interdisciplinary Graduate & Professional Student Symposium, and Best Poster Award at the International Society for Psychoneuroendocrinology in Montreal. I also have extensive experience writing and editing scientific publications and grants.
