Education

My students have heard the concepts explained to them many times already, but they keep getting stuck when they try to solve problems. My expertise in both math/physics/programming and pedagogy—I received my B.S. in Physics with distinction from Stanford and my M.S. in Physics from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign with a focus on the teaching and learning of physics—allows me to offer my students' own thinking a central place in my lessons. I empower my students to “hold the pencil” and solve problems themselves with my encouragement and guidance. My students get to USE the concepts they’re learning, and they “click” in a totally new way. For whatever challenges remain, I can offer targeted, in-the-moment instruction. Practically, I encourage my students to bring homework, study materials, and graded quizzes and exams to our lessons. Working with existing course materials allows me to align my teaching to students’ practical academic needs and help them make better use of the resources they already have. AWARDS: • Teacher Ranked as Excellent, four semesters, campus-wide, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign • David S. Levine Award, “awarded to the most outstanding physics student [in their Junior year at Stanford] on the basis of academic breadth in addition to demonstrated abilities in experimental physics”

Experience

I have studied or worked in STEM education for over ten years. In my lessons, I routinely help my students solve problems that I have never seen before. My expertise in the disciplines I teach enables me to keep my bearing when my students are stumped. My knowledge, training, and experience in pedagogy allow me to keep my students’ needs in focus and identify supports I can offer them in each moment. I conducted my graduate research as a member of the Physics Education Research Group in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I studied students' sense making with equations, collaborative discussion section design, and authentic physics laboratory experiences. While an undergraduate at Stanford, I ran a student-initiated scientific Python course for three years. I have been tutoring professionally since 2012, including a leadership role as a peer tutor at Stanford.

Hobbies

My physics background got me interested in technical pursuits involving data, while my education background got me interested in the social side of technology. I enjoy creating customized interactive data visualizations, such as a recent volunteering project to analyze how industrial polluters and truck traffic affect the air quality in a historically Black neighborhood. My favorite part of that process is talking to the people using the data to advocate for their neighborhood to understand what they need from the visualization and how the design can be improved. Outside of work, I love to play music and get outdoors as much as possible. I'm enthusiastic, creative, and introspective.
